Girtie's Long Arm Quilting Service

My name is Katherine “Girtie” Girton. A quilter for 25 years, I am passionate about anything related to quilting. I started out doing whole cloth hand quilting around designs. We call them cheater quilts today. Then I sewed pieces of fabric together. You all know how it goes from there. I started taking classes, buying fabric, building a stash, learning about color, thread, tension, batting, bias, and ” seams. So much to learn; so little time!

I didn’t have time to get all my large quilts hand quilted and I knew quilting on a home machine was difficult. Then I saw a longarm demonstration at a quilt guild meeting, I was hooked! In 2006 I purchased a Nolting Fun Quilter with a 12 foot frame. Two years later, I increased my frame to 14 feet which is capable of handling a California King with ease. After much practice on my own quilts and those of my friends, my studio opened to the public in 2007. I had the opportunity to enter my quilt “All A Glitter” in 2010 at the MQS New England Quilt Show. I was so proud just to have my quilt hang with all the other glorious works of ar. I was walking on air for weeks. To have a quilt accepted in a quilt show of that stature is a challenging process. So it was huge for me when I received my notification that my piece had been accepted. I hope to enter other quilts in the future that might win a coveted prize.

I wanted to have a studio that would open up the whole quilting experience to everyone so I gathered four of my dear friends and practiced on them, to see what would work or not work. I was talking to a wonderful quilter friend one afternoon, and asked her to teach a class for me at my shop. She agreed, and off we went to the next step. I opened Girtie’s Studio to the public in the winter of 2013 with a short list of teachers and classes. By fall more teachers joined us and more classes were offered keeping the studio abuzz from morning to night. Excitement over fabric selection and project completion keeps the quilting spirit alive.

My husband Gary also got into the act. A skilled woodworking hobbyist, he was easily convinced that quilters need specialized tools and ironing boards to fulfill their passion. He makes one-of-a-kind stilettos, seam rippers, pin bowls, ruler racks, and big board ironing tables to entice quilters who visit the shop.
